Degree Programs
Undergraduate Curriculum
The undergraduate curriculum in Chemical Engineering is undergoing constant change to reflect the needs of the profession relative to graduate preparation. These changes are primarly driven by the need to maintain program accreditation (ABET). Students in Chemical Engineering at New Mexico State University are admitted under that degree program that appears in the catalog at the time of their admission; however, students may elect to follow any of the degree programs that appear after the program to which they were admitted. Students may not elect a degree program that was published before their date of admission. A degree program that appears in an NMSU Undergraduate Catalog remains valid for seven years, after which students must select a degree program from one of the recent catalogs.
The 2008-2009 B.S. Ch. E. Curriculum contains some exciting changes. To begin with, students entering under this catalog will be required to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination during their senior year. In addition, many of the formerly specified engineering electives have been changed to "technical electives", allowing the student a wider range of selection in the content of their educational program. While the faculty provide suggested tracks for student to follow to achieve a particular emphasis, students are free to explore the many technical programs around campus, and define their own elective programs of study.
